One of the main reasons students leave high school without getting a diploma is that they see no reason for staying in school when they can be out earning money (or at least not getting frustrated with subjects they find irrelevant or difficult).

This is a very difficult question to answer and not a simple one.

First, it's important that Hispanic students feel success in school. It would take a dissertation (or two) to outline ways to make them successful. Making sure they learn both English and Spanish --and learning them well-- are both important. This takes determination from school systems, money to provide for teachers, training of staff, and facilities to work with individual students to help them overcome their difficulties. In short, this takes a supportive attitude from the community.

Involving parents in the school system is also important. Most parents want the best for their children, but may not know how to help them or may be working so hard they don't have the time or energy to help their children. English language support and training for parents, as well as facilities where parents can go for guidance are critical. Again, this requires involvement of professionals and a positive attitude by school systems. This is ongoing and difficult and takes a great deal of resources and financial outlay. Again, a positive community is essential.

Providing students with a place to go after school, to study, to play, to learn, is also important. In this way, they will have less time to get into trouble, and will have a secure place to go for help. Again, community involvement, support, and financial input are essential.

I hope this gave you some ideas. Good luck.

Hello, school is totally boring. The peer pressure in school doesn't help either. I think you should go to school till you are 13. Then be home schooled till you are 18 but be made to go to some sort of club where you are able to interact with kids but in something that you like to do. Music, dance, arts, like a mini club or vocational club so you interact with kids that really want to be there in that club. It cuts down on the peer pressure and bullying. Then when you are old enough to handle it you go study for your career in college. Can you tell i had a terrible life in high school ? lol

Typically, parents that have an interest of what their kids study in school have kids that do well in school and do not drop out. If parents do not feel that it is very important, then their kids will not try to excel and will fall behind. It is the parents you have to target, not the kids.

Perhaps they should hire more staff that knows Spanish language and/or really understands the culture. You need people who can really relate to those kids. If staff can't be had, what about looking into the communities for volunteers?
