David Gilmour without a doubt! Clapton is well known because his blues-based riffs, but Gilmour have power and he knows how to do his job with the guitar: from blues to spanish guitar, heavy rock, acustic guitar... Clapton have the name but Gilmour have the power!
PS the question was about Gilmour or Clapton, Hendrix, Page, Blackmore, Iommi, Vaughn, Santana, Satriani, Vai and others are out of question I think...

Hard one, seen both live, at the present moment I'd say Dave Gilmour, maybe cos I'm having a Floyd fest, but Clapton, his playing sings. Gilmour was recently voted best guitar solo eva recently, or so I heard

gilmour without a doubt clapton cant touch on the phsycadelic and moving notes gilmour can hit.just listen to the solos in shine on and comfortably numb or the funkyness of money.actually the greatest guitarist that ever lived...clapton doesnt even come into the picture when gilmour is mentioned

gilmour any day of the week ,claptons gone stale and just rehashes old blues (again)not that thats a bad thing just its about time he came up with something new ,whereas gilmour is blues influenced he doesnt just play blues and he has his own distinct sound as does clapton just that it has a nicer tone to it
