i installed a 80gb hard drive as a slave to a 80gb master drive, but soon after i lost my dvd-rom as a device, this happened just after i also tried to install a usb device
after a bit of head scratching,i thought i would try it without the slave drive, and when i got the drive out it was "red hot",....why was this
i have a 400w ctk psu,and a radeon 9250 which dosent burn extra juice like the bigger models
every thing is fine now but how will i use a extra drive,a psu upgrade or take out a optical drive
specs...amd athlon 3200+ ,768mb ddr ram 80gb hdd
any ideas

Red hot? hope is not seeing red hot lol. If the hard drives are in very close proximity with each other especially on a hot day, it will be very hot in that area. Check the temperature in the bios to make sure things are good if equipped. My HDs are in close proximity to each other and it gets super hot but i does take off d case so there is airflow. If u want, install a extra fan on yur cpu to keep d cpu cool at all times. These fans are hooked up on the front and take up a cd-rom space. Check yur jumpers and ESPECIALLY the power. The dvd and USB probably is because u using up "ports". If u want, buy an enclosure and put one of the 80gb HD or the DVD in that where the enclosure connects via the USB. It behaves like if u put in a removable disk but just bigger space. Laterz!

Most of the other answers are good, especially checking the ribbon placement....
Another solution...Are you stacking the HD's on top of each other?
If you have the space, try moving the slave down a spot or 2 to get some air in between them...If your HDD's are mounted in your 5.25 bays, try going HDD, DVD, then #2 HDD...
Adding extra vent fans will also help your system overall in keeping the inside cooler...And depending on your case design, there should be a plastic cage on the "front-bottom" that you can put an additional fan in...Just make sure the air flows INTO the case, and occasionally clean the fan and vent holes on the case...

I trust you compared the temp between the 2 drives and found this one to be noticeable hotter?
Check whether the air flow, based on location would be less and see whether you can reroute some ribbon cables to allow more airflow. If that is NOT it, you may simply have a defective drive with a partial short in the motor.
Also, there are coolers one get get to install on HDDs.

Computers get hot. Particularly the hard drive considering it does a lot of work. The slave hard drive does even more hard work, so it heats up.

When a piece of computer hardware is hotter than it should be, excluding routers, it seems like they are not properly ventilated or they are faulty.
