You're supposed to think at first that it's a mock of 2001: A Space Odessy, but the satellite is The Simpson's way of making fun of Fox. They do that a lot; for instance, in the episode "Behind the Laughter," Homer tried to show his demo tapes to several major networks (NBC, Telemundo, et cetera), but failed. Marge's "network connection" was that the man who cut her hair was also president of Fox.

It's spoofing the end of "2001: A Space Odyssey", much as the rest of the episode, "Deep Space Homer", did, eg. the zero-grav eating of floating potato chips to the tune of "The Blue Danube", etc

Ya, there's an episode where Homer gets an eye problem and to solve it. The doctor gives him medicinal marijuana. I love that episode. "It smells like the art teachers office." Lisa Simpson That's one of the quotes.

Home in the Bubble is straight out of 2001 A Space Odyssey, but not the satelite!!

The satelite could be a reference to 'Indenpendence Day' where the satelites crash into the alien mothercraft near the start of the film

I think i means that if Grampa Simpson had pulled out duting sex then Homer would have been shot into space sooner.

its a homage to 2001: A Space Odyssey (Stanley Kubrick film) wich features a embryo/baby hovering about in space at the end. doesnt ask what the film is about, though, i've seen it several times and it still confuses me!

just yet another jab at fox i assume, since the Simpsons is full of them.

Actually, its quite good how Fox allows it on such a regular basis!

That's the last scene of "2001: Space Odessey"...it was a weird film but it was good too. I guess they were making fun of it!
