Seperation took place under the Sereation Act of 1926
Under the treaty the 6 provencies from the north remained a part of the United Kingdom. Wereas the remander of Ireland became a semi automous state known as Irish Free State
It wasnt until 1947 that full independance took place after the majority in the south voted to become Eire

The partition was in 1921 I think, on the formation of the Irish Free State. This was seen as a sell-out on the part of the Irish Nationalist movement and caused civil war on the island, and sowed the seeds for future conflict. Very complex issues to read into though.
Ireland finally became a republic in 1948 I believe.
