Yes and no. I remember one day I had three interviews. I wore the same suit to each. With one it was okay, with another it was too cheap, and the third--it was for a physical job and the suit had no place, so I was given the five-minute spiel and sent away.
Then too, what are your customers like? What is the image you need to hold? When I was a Farmers Insurance agent, I could dress very casual and maybe add a tie on special occassions. When I was a New York Life agent, everyone sneered at my best suit.
It does help, often but not always, if you are well dressed. As for looking professional, sometimes that is hard, sometimes that is too much. Watch the others in your line of work and watch the people they serve, go in casually to scout out things, then show up for real in the appropriate attire, or as close as you can come.

If you were to come into my place of business dressed unprofessionally, I would throw your resume in the trash after you left. If you do not have enough respect for me, my company or yourself to groom and dress well before an interview, you would not be the type of person who I would want to interact with my customer base. You only have one chance to make a first impression.

YES! When people interview you or even just work with you they judge you on your appearance. They figure if you don't care enough to look clean and professional you won't care about your job either.

well of course dumb@$$. If you dress the way you think you should dress for a job it will be noticed. Hence, making you look more "profesional" in your place of ocpupation. Also kissing *** could get you pretty far in or at your place of ocupation.
