The Grafenberg "spot" is really a patch or crest, on the front side of the vagina, not far in at all. It responds to firm pressure, and rubbing, rather than tickling. Dr Beverley Whipple suggests that it functions during childbirth to reduce pain; sexual pleasure / arousal has an effect that reduces awareness of pain.
