Somebody who was mixing/producing/mastering the song decided it would be better to drown out the singer. I'm not sure what you mean, though, I can usually hear singer but can't understand the lyrics. I just figure the singer is singing incoherently.
Also, due to the influence of hip hop on all music production, all music nowadays has the tendency to just crank up the volume on everything - loud, loud, loud is the rule of the day. Except in country, actually, you can usually understand the words in a country song.
