was the service that bad?

I always tip the waiter if there is one. Even at Denny's and stuff I leave a dollar or something at the table...they get really horrible wages sometimes I know. So I leave money, even if it's a smaller tip than usual.

Absolutely.
Let me first say, " every waiter or waitress knows their real income is in the tips received. Both my mother and sister were waitresses and I was brought up with a firm understanding of what good service is. An as a former hair stylist, I also have an appreciation of tipping.

I will also agree that a waiter or waitress should be paid minimum wage to begin with. But that wasn't the question.

You pay for the meal separately. Every waiter or waitress knows what is expected in doing a good job. If the person is very busy, a simple "I'll be right with you" will do. If something asked for was forgotten, a simple "I apologize and I will get that" will do.

I'm very generous in tipping, though I will not reward bad service. Good service is not perfection, it's effort.

I only have once, and that was because there were 5 of us, and the waitress got EVERY single order wrong, and never came back to even give us a chance to tell her it was wrong. She never checked to see how things were. Took forever to even bring us menus in the first place! Never refilled our drinks. The place was almost empty, to top it off! It was us and maybe two other tables? We had to flag her down to get our check, and then she said she would bring it and never came back with it, for over ten minutes. Eventually we walked over the hostess and asked for it. So, we couldn't get change or do anything, and just figured she didn't deserve one anyhow. That was the only time though. Even if the service is somewhat crappy, I still give at least 10-15%, more like 15-22% if the service is good.

No, but the other day I gave a waitress a lot less than I would have, because she was super slow and kept forgetting things. One time, it took two hours for a Pizza to be delivered and I didn't give the driver a tip. And I always tip the Pizza boy because I used to be one!

And Gizmo, that's a bad excuse to not leave a tip. If you can't afford it, you shouldn't eat out.

Yes, last Super Bowl Sunday I was at a Coney Island and the waitress was so ready to leave it was disgusting.
She was yelling things across the restaraunt to her coworkers.
She didn't refill our drinks, we had to go and get our own ketchup, she was spraying cleaner on the tables around so much that the fumes were lingering in the air and we could taste it.
She quit spraying cleaner when I told her to but the whole experience was so bad I was furious. My son and I went out for dinner and shopping because we didn't want to watch the Super Bowl and she ruined our dinner. Plus she looked really angry from the minute we arrived. It was not almost closing time, she just didn't want to be there I guess.

It is very rare but yes the service was so bad (and the food was not much better) that I not only did not leave a tip I recommended never going to that place again.

If they were rude and discourteous, then yes I've left with tipping the waiter / waitress although I do try to tip no matter what but on occasion it's definitely not warranted. But if they were trying their best (and subsequently failed) in doing their duties, I leave a small tip irregardless.

I have a few times, if the service is really bad.
One time the waitress was being really mean to me, but would walk to the end of the counter and chat and laugh with her friends and then come back to me and be crabby. I left her a penny.

Yes, and I felt terrible. My daughter took me to dinner so I didn't take my wallet. She didn't have any cash left so the poor girl didn't get a tip. It had nothing to do with the service however, the girl tried really hard and did a good job!!

twice: once on accident-my friend was the hostess and I got to talking to her and totally forgot her tip, I felt awful. But the second time was on purpose, our hostess was rude, uninterested, got both of our orders wrong and left us sitting waiting for our drinks for almost 20 minutes, and she didn't seem to have a problem with time because she took 3/4 of that 20 minutes to stand and gab with one of the other waiters. Grrr! No tip for her!!
