I teach marine biology at the Marinology Institute in Watertown, MA. Some of my students actually thought that dolphins actually smile for real! Hahaha. A fish that can smile? Yeah right! Ever seen a whale laugh with a joke? Guess not. Fish can not swim! I can't believe how stupid some students are. I blame MTV and videogames.

I am not sure you teach marine biology. Because, Dolphins and whales are not fish.

And answering your question,

It is true that fish can't smile or laugh....the reason is - emotions that human beings portray are not necessarily similar to that of other animals.
- Anger, disgust , or happiness that humans show is not necessarily experienced by other animals (because their brains are not as developed as human brains).
- Even if some animals experience them they do not necessarily manifest it like humans.

It is true that MTV, video games and cinema have a great impact in the learning process of youngsters (i wouldn't comment good or bad).
The students are not stupid. They are ignorant. Being the teacher it is your job to teach them what is right.

You are picking on the Belgians educational system that it is bad and the Belgians stupid but every school kid could say you that whales and dolphins are NO fish. And you teach marine biology ? Poor USA with such a teacher that ridiculise his own students in public !

No. Why should fish be devoid of feelings ? Even though you may teach marine biology you do not have a scientific bent of mind and are rigid and inflexible. Your students are far better. Learn from them.
