I'm curious to know how much traffic I'll run into on my way up there. I want to make it in 5 1/2 hours - is that realistic?

I drive from Lower De to Boston in 7 hours during the week. Realistically, you should be able to make it in about 4 on the weekends and 6 during the week...During the week crossing the Washington bridge takes the longest. If you run the jersey turnpike all the way up and cut over into Connticut ( i think its 84) it is longer mile wise but faster time wise..the earlier you leave the better the travel time, just avoid hitting NYC at peak hours like morning rush hour and lunch traffic or coming home. Your biggest problem will be the tractor trailers.. They move slowly and make your ride longer.. Especially going up 95. They use that corridor more..
Enjoy the trip. The long way is better and much nicer scenery unless you want to see the ocean.

Instead of 95 out of NYC, take NJ Turnpike to GSP up to 287 toward Tappan Zee, then 684 at White Plains to Brewster, 84 east through Hartford to 90 at Sturbridge, then 90 east into the city. Be careful if you plan to head into downtown as the Big Dig tunnels are still a mess.
