The Sultan of Brunei has a harem and polygamy is still practiced, though illegal in the US. Warren Jeff's, the leader of a mormon polygamy cult was listed on the FBI's 10 most wanted and captured about a week ago. My husband worked briefly with a Kuwaiti man who said that polygamy is legal but regulated by law. He explained that few men do it because the law says that if you buy a home for one wife, the other wives get their own identical to the first. If you give one wife a diamond ring, the others get one too. Few men can afford more than one, he said.

From what I understand, yes, in the Middle East, but there are some problems in practical maintenance because of expense and the need to treat all wives equally, per Koranic dictates. See Wikipedia article.

Harem: The World Behind the Veil by Alev Lytle Croutier is an excellent historical overview----see review at Amazon.

PS: From what I hear, it's NOT a matter of wild frantic orgies all night---that's a lot of Western sexual fantasy rearing its head. Think of it more as an extended family structure, with an intensely patriarchial structure, and you'd be closer to reality...

You may also get some limited information on harem living in the works of Elizabeth Warnock Fernea, who was living and studying in the Arabic countries for a number of years. Start with Guests of the Sheik, written before the Iraq changes.
