For most people it means the same thing, but technically it is NOT the same thing.
The technology behind the concept of an internet was first conceived as a strategic solution to de-centralize the communication systems of the US military in face of a potential nuclear attack by the (then) Soviet Union back in the cold war. According to the way things worked then, a single attack to the nerve center of the command and control structure would render the entire country helpless.
A network of networks or an interconnected network (later shortened as the Internet) consisting of a numerous servers and client computers that can maintain functionality of the overall network even after losing any number of it's nodes was formulated.
This technology later declassified was applied to the commercial and educational purposes. This was popularized during the late 80s to the early 90s.
Even at that time, the word Internet was still used to describe the overall global network with the common standards while many protocols or methods of information sharing and connectivity existed. Among those were, email, telnet, ftp, gopher, news and finally WWW.
During the mid to late 90s one of these protocols, the World Wide Web got a huge boost in terms of technology, features and user base. Though originally intended for interlinking documents through hyper text (hence the name hyper text transfer protocol or http) the addition of images and other digital media made the WWW much more popular among the general public. So much popular to the point that functions usually done through other protocols (such as email and news discussions) were brought over to the Web itself (in the form of web based email and web based discussion groups etc).
Though the other protocols remain active behind the scenes (ftp when you download a file for example) and among IT professionals (eg. telnet used to administer servers) for the majority of the users, the only useful (or at least the most visible) feature of the internet today has become the World Wide Web, hence these terms had almost become synonymous.

The Internet was created before the World Wide Web. The Internet is the backbone for the World Wide Web.
The first network, that was the basis for the Internet, came online October 29, 1969 it was called ARPANET. It was created by the DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency). So thanks to the Cold War we have the Internet today.
Before the World Wide Web, people would have to use different programs to exchange files and email. Now with Web browsers we can do that and more.
The ideas that lead to the World Wide Web were being discussed in the 1980's.
"On August 6th, 1991 CERN, which straddles the border between France and Switzerland publicized the new World Wide Web project, two years after Tim Berners-Lee had begun creating HTML, HTTP and the first few Web pages at CERN." from Wikipedia.
The World Wide Web is part of the internet that is accessable using software called a browser. The browser uses HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP), which specifies how the browser and server communicate with each other. A browser is used to read Web pages written using HyperText Markup Language (HTML). HTML is used to create web pages. In the beginning of the World Wide Web the http addresses started with "www" to signify that they were part of the World Wide Web.

The Internet is the network of computers and computer systems (servers and PCs). The World Wide Web is the network of DOCUMENTS. Tim Berners-Lee and others created the web as a commercial / industrial communication tool in the 70s. Who would have guessed it would have taken off the way it has?

rather everyone who's asserting they're an identical is incorrect!! the internet is the relationship between tens of millions of computers, servers and so on international extensive. it rather is like the stressful wiring - what makes the WWW achieveable. the international-extensive-internet is the great determination of internet pages on the internet, eg this one. So, working example, you're utilising the internet once you chat over MSN, yet you're no longer utilising the international-extensive-internet. wish this helps!

In the vernacular, they are the same thing. WWW is an older term. In formal definition, WWW refers just to the subset of the internet that consists of web pages.
