Is it peeling all over? If it is just on the roof or the hood, you can have that one panel repainted. That will be far less expensive than the entire car, and it will take less time, too.
Otherwise, you need a new paint job. Call around to paint shops (including Maaco) and get a few quotes. Ask what it would cost if you did some of the work, such as sanding and dent fixing. If you know how to do these things, you could save yourself some money.
Otherwise, a full paint job for your car will start at $500 or so for a cheap/fast job to $3,000 for one that takes more time and looks a lot better. If just a panel or two need repainting, I would just do those. Otherwise, I'd prep the car as much as possible to save a few bucks, then get a quality paint job.

The peeling is caused by acid rain and lack of care.I would bet the color is either red or black.I would also bet you live near some factories or the ocean.It is a common failure of paint.The clear coat seperates from the paint.Maaco is supposed to be very good.I assume you have a base coat-clear coat.If you do,make sure you get whatever you ahd before.I had a base coat-clear coat and my clear coat started peeling.I went to Maaco and they wanted $2000 for the same type of paint.Iwent to a local guy and he did an ENAMEL for $800.The enamel does not have the depth or shine of a BC/CC so it's up to you.You should wash your car @ 1 time a month to wash away atmospheric fall-out. You should wax a Red or Black car atleast every 3 mos. in the south,Every month in Florida,or Once a year for all other situations.

I think when you say peeling I think you mean the clear coat is coming off. It makes them look like they are peeling. It would not hurt to go to Maaco. I don't know much about them, I just have heard that they paint a car cheap. Many years ago I knew of a man who took his car to one and they charge him a lot for little repairs. I guess that made up for the price of the cheap paint job.

Actually, the problem is caused by the american car makers trying to save a few bucks in that era. They tried to use a paint/primer product that was applied at one time. Guess what, it didn't work.
Ford tried to stay out of this, but ended up doing other things to make up for it.
It needs to be sanded, primed and painted.

please do no longer take this the incorrect way, they are throw away vehicles, they the two have a head gasket difficulty, or they have a foul transmission, the different ingredient is they have a foul window leak, around the doorways considering there is not any trim artwork. while you're searching for a small vehicle, the main suitable answer is to locate a geo prim, comparable ingredient as a toyota carola, or a carola, or a civic, little extra money, yet they're going to final longer than a neon..

Maaco does nice work. They won't do the prep work though and prep work for painting is most of the pain job. If you have crappy prep work, you will have a bad paint job.

How long do you plan to keep the car?
1-2 years -> spend $500
2-5 years -> spend $750 -$1000
longer -> spend money on a nice job where they will strip the exterior, paint and put new seals/trim etc.
Don't spend more than you have to... it's just a car.

The problem is base coat clear coat paint they use in the US.
I would buy the old oil paints ( Tractor Paints) and paint it myself.
