you can "rip" the cd and you will end up with individual digital files (e.g. MP3) then you will have your MP3 file. You can use Windows Media Player to rip CDs.

In iTunes the files appear as iTunes music files and yoiu may be able to convert them using other software.

As I don't use itunes, I can't tell you how to convert Apples music format to MP3. However, with a standard CD I can help.

Pop your cd into your drive and open windows media player. Go to tools and then options and click on the "rip music" tab. You'll see a pulldown menu about half way down which will probably say "Windows Media Audio" or "wMA" for short. Pull down the menu and change it to mp3. There will also be a slider there allowing you to choose the quality of mp3 file. The higher the slider is, the higher the quality of music file is and the more memory it will take up. I generally keep mine at 192kbps. Make sure that "copy protect music" is deselected as you won't be able to play any recorded cd's back on an mp3 player if that is what you want to do.
Now, once you've done all that, press OK. And you've got your windows media player sitting in front of you again. There should be a tab which says "rip" at the top. Or alternatively it may say "play cd/dvd". Your music cd will be shown in the window and you'll see tick boxes down the left hand side. This is where you select the music tracks that you want to turn into mp3 files. Once you have checked the ones you want then click on the rip button. Sometimes it's red in colour. This will start copying your music to a folder, USUALLY your "My Music" folder which is accessible through your start menu.
You should see your mp3 files within this folder.

I am doing this according to Windows XP and I'm using Windows Media Player version 11 which is relatively new. There may be some small differences between my system and yours, but it should be about the same.

The easiest and cheapest way is to install the latest version of Windows Media Player, burn the music to a CD then rip the CD to the computer in MP3 format.

Windows Media Player has a function called Rip, which will allow you to "copy" your CD to your PC, creating an mp3. The directions for this are on the website below.
