43 cars racing in the next 10 races.
Anyone can win the races, points are distributed per the "regular" point system.
The Overall Points have been reset so that the top 10 in the Chase are so far ahead of the rest of the pack that there is no way that they can be caught, so fundamentally the only ones who have a shot at the Cup are those top 10.
The points for those top 10 chasers have been reset so that Matt Kenseth is only 5 points ahead of Jimmie, who's only 5 points ahead of the next person, etc. etc. So only 45 points separates 1st and 10th right now.
11th through the rest of the field had no point adjustments made, I think. I also think there is a bonus for finishing 11th (i.e. "First of the non-Chasers), but I'm not 100% sure on that.
So Tony Stewart could win the next 10 races, but the best that he could finish overall is 11th.
Jimmie Johnson, who was so dominant for much of the season, could lose the next 10 races, but the worst that he could finish overall is 10th.

All 43 cars will start, but the top 10 will be the only ones elligible to win the cup. All other drivers are just racing for the win and the money. As far as interfering with the chase drivers, I think it makes it more exciting. Something could happen for the 10th place driver to move up to first, say if the leaders have a huge wreck, or they have a DNF, it can really shake things up.
I am still not a big fan of "The Chase" and I watch to see the whole field of drivers, not just the top 10. Something needs to be done or changed to make it a little better.

The 10 contenders for the Cup race each other for the Cup during each of the final 10 races. Whoever has the most points at the end of the final race wins the Nascar Cup.

Yes this year it is only ten drivers as the rules are now after 26 races the top ten drivers or any drivers within 400 points of the points leader make the chase so far the 400 point provision has never come into play.Brian France has said he wants to tweak the points and chase system before the 2007 season so it's anybodies guess how it will be set up next year.

For the final ten races of the season drivers who are either in the Top 10 in points or within 400 points of the leader after the Richmond, VA race are competing against each other for the Nextel Cup. The driver in first place is given 5050 points total and each driver behind that person is given 5 points less. However, 43 cars will start in each of the final 10 races and those drivers are able to win. They may even hamper the efforts of the drivers in the Chase. In 2004 Robbie Gordon and Greg Biffle tangled on the track during the first race in the chase at Loudon, NH causing Jeremy Mayfield and Tony Stewart to crash out of the race. This severely hampered their ability to gain enough points during the final ten races of the season to win the championship. you can check out this page on NASCAR's website for more info on the Chase for the Cup and how the points for each race area awarded. http://www.nascar.com/news/headlines/official/points.explained/

All of the drivers compete in the race, but only the top 10 points leaders are capable of being the nextel cup champion. The other drivers are racing for the race purse and pride. Yes they do interefere with the other drivers who have qualified for the "chase"

Only 10 cars racing for the final overall winner of the entire season...there will be more than that at each race though.
