I would (and do) write about what I know, meaning my life experiences; growing up, what my childhood was like, what life was like in the 1970s, the type of music I listened to, where I was when I found out the Beatles were breaking up, when President Kennedy got shot, going to a mostly Hispanic high school as a minority white chick and getting jumped on my first day, what my neighborhood was like, my family dynamics (having a father for a bigot, for instance and dating a Mexican). I would (and do) write about these contrasts in my life and try to make sense of them through my writing.
I would (and do) write about contrasts that I observe on a daily basis. Like the black woman I saw in a New York toilet, handing out paper towels for people to dry their hands.
I write about day laborers sitting on the corner waiting for work. I write about a little girl whose parents work as carnival people and travel the county fair circuit. She lives in a motor home and moves every 3 weeks.
I write about everything that moves me, that I think about once it's out of my sight. I write constantly. Right now, I'm writing to you.
Then, sometimes, I come up with something good. But, even when I don't, I'm always practicing. And, you know something? I never, ever get writer's block.

It would depend on my mood. I write stories all the time and the subject matter is always different. I think it also depends on what I'm reading or influenced by at the time. Right now I'm writing a lot of horror focused material because of the change in seasons in my area.

I've written several books independently, and one commissioned book. The commissioned book was a stinker to do, because the subject wasn't one that really grabbed me. So when I write another story, it's going to be on something about which I am passionate.

There are two kinds of stories which I would write. One would be biographical, about my own life and experiences. The other, which I have actually already begun quite some time ago and never finished, would be historically based fiction.

well, i would definitely stick to things pertinent to me.
i would write a story themed on the degrading state of human nature in socioty, probbobly something in a school in that case.
maybe i woud write about the first humans, the development of cultures and socioties, the thinkers, the rulers and the warriors.
or possibly about an ex-military group, they are being hunted down. and they are black mailed, and need to keep from dieing.
or any number of other intresting topics!

The moral/ethical dilemma posed by the end justifying the means.
A person who espouses a noble cause falls to the temptation of doing a small, immoral thing to advance that cause and then proceeds with increasing speed down that slippery slope.

Science Fiction/Fantasy has always drawn me... I enjoy reading about far off galaxies, travelling space adventurers, mighty wizards and Elves battling dragons (and other nasty critters).
Oh... and the occasional Stephen King novel here and there is also cool.

I totally agree with Krynne. I really enjoy reading and writing sci-fi and fantasy, fantasy being my favorite. I enjoy a fantasy written in the traditional style with elves, dragons, princess, evil wizards, knights in shining armor. You know, the type with a princess being rescued from an evil wizard who has her locked away in a castle, by her knight in shining armor who carries her away on his noble steed and they live happily ever after. You probably get my meaning.
