You know, I don't know if it's a tradition anywhere else, but here in the states, when semesters at our universities let out or are ready to begin again, in many university towns the streets are lined with furniture that people are giving away, because they can't transport it or just don't want it anymore. Some places make an actual holiday out of it. You may want to ask around to see if any major university areas around you do that, too.

Lots of people here also post "give away" ads in the news paper, and gladly push furniture they don't want out the door for anybody who can bring a vehicle and haul it away.

Also many of our furniture stores throw out the floor model furniture simply because people have been sitting on it. Lots of places just reduce the price and sell the floor models, too, but if you look around, you'll probably find a place that just pushes all of the sat-on furniture outside for collection, usually a couple of times a month. I got a pillow-top Queen size mattress and box spring that way, when I was 17.

Try CraigsList.com , and do you guys have anything like we do called "The Penny Saver", in the US there is always free stuff in there.

BTW, I'm just assuming you are in the UK because you call your place a flat. Good luck.

www.freecycle.co.uk

Its a website that people can advertise their unwanted stuff. The only rule is that its all free, the idea is to recycle your old stuff not sell it on. You may be able to get something on here, but you have to check regularly as the good stuff goes quickly as its all free.

best thing to do is ask at your local council office

second idea would be to tell friends and family about situation - i did this and the offers came flooding in - ended up with two dining room tables though!!!

good luck in your new home.

look for a freecycle website that caters to your area. I know a friend of mine got a used refrigerator and stove through freecycle.

A great place is to check college message boards in the common areas; somebody's always getting rid of furniture, especially in the spring
