In the UK an MP is commonly known as an Member of Parliament, who each represent a constituency of which there are 646 in the UK. In each constituency voters elect their MP by voting for a party, and then in Parliament the MPs are supposed to vote on issues on behalf of their constituents, but at the same time they are also expected to vote with the general opinion of whichever party they belong to.
