Because man has made/turned the world this way where material things seem to take priority over everything else, that's why all sensibility of what is really important has been lost.

My thoughts on this is yes, it's great to have friends and family, but you know what? That doesn't put a roof over your head or food in your tummy. Never understood people who talk about money as if it is a bad thing.
Consider this... even back in the days when there was no money, when people were trading goods and services for food and shelter, nothing was different, in fact, it may have been a bit worse. Men would have to work many more hours back then, just to make ends meat, seeing their families less and less. Trappers would go out for days on end walking the trails and hoping to find an animal in one of their traps so they could trade the fur for something else. Do you think that promoted family and relationships more than todays world? I think not.
Consider this as well, money bought me this computer. With it, and the internet connection also purchased with money, enables me to communicate to a vastly greater population than would otherwise be possible. I have met many people online and still retain friendship with some of them to this day... couldn't have done that without money.
As for international views, not having money would be something like living in the poorest nations of Africa or china. Look at their quality of life and their living conditions and compare that to our society, both here in america, in europe, and other wealthy countries. Who benifits more from life? The poor?
And you are also mistaken about money not being commodity backed. The US Dollar is backed by gold. You can take your one dollar and demand a dollars worth of gold any time you like and you will get it. If money were not commodity backed, the government could print off trillions of dollars and use it to spend on their projects and whatever other nasty things they like to blow money on (War? 2 million dollars for one missle?) But that is not the case. They must collect their money from us in taxes, because they do not have the right to simply print what they need. The dollar would be worthless if they did that. It is the most basic form of economics. Perhaps you should read up on it a bit.
Good luck, hope you lived through all that.

America is much more materialistic than other countries. I was amazed when I moved back to the U.S. at just what a materialistic society it had become, because I was accustomed to being around people who had very little or nothing at all and seeing how Americans had to have all their things and stuff was just a bit hard to get accustomed to.
I remember very clearly, when I came back to the U.S on a visit. I had been living in Haiti for 2 years and my wife sent me to the supermarket to pick up a few items.
I walked down the isle with the canned beans and suddenly realized that there were more than 50 kinds of canned beans on the shelves... and... I just started crying and I couldn't stop... it was just such a shock to my senses that I couldn't handle it... and that is really strange for someone like I was at the time, who was never bothered by anything or anyone... but those damn beans just got to me.
That is when I realized just what a materialistic society America has become.

lol "it happened sometime after the Vietnam War". Wow. No offense, but that's the most ignorant thing I've ever heard. Have you ever heard about the Great Depression?? People were offing themselves because they lost everything...they still had friends and family, but the important thing was the money they lost in stocks. I'm pretty sure that was before the Vietnam War. Oooo how about in medevil times when there were Kings and Queens and Princes who would spit on those less fortunate than they were?? I'm pretty sure it was before the Veitnam War. Lol, seriously don't justify something just because you were involved in it. We've always been about material possessions and it will NEVER change.

It's not about money persay, but about power.
Even in Bible times, when there was no paper money... people bartered with animals. Livestock was the currency of choice, and greedy people would kill or steal other's animals.
The world became all about material things at the fall of Adam and Eve, when suddenly there weren't abundant resources for everybody and human nature takes care of the greed.

I think it started with the women's movement in 1970. They destroyed the idea that family relationships need a lot of time and energy so they could convince women to go out and work. The radical change in the cost of living did not happen until after this Women's Liberation brainwashing.

Money is not worthless... 5 dollar bills are worth... 5 dollars. Not worthless. Greed has been around since the dawn of creation.

It all started when big companies decided to create WANTS to eventually make them as NEEDS of people. Through advertisements, they have manipulated our way of thinking. They have created classes. They have used famous people to be their image models. This is happening unconsciously. Just don't lose touch to reality. Don't be overwhelmed by mundane things.
