Whenever i walk down stairs or go down a ladder, both of my knees make quite a loud cracking sound which doesnt hurt but its getting to be quite irritable. I'm only 20 years old and i havent been in any major accidents. i'm worried that this might escalate into something more serious. is it anything to wrry about?

is it like knuckles popping ? I would see a family dr. if it is really irritating you. It's better to stop it now (if you can) before it gets worse and harder to fix. At least having a medical professional tell you it's nothing will ease your mind, but I did find this....

"Joint cracking, commonly in the ankles and knees when walking up steps, is usually a benign condition that you do not need to worry about. While the exact cause is hard to detect, you are not doing damage to the joints when you hear them crack.

If you have pain associated with the cracking joints, then you should be evaluated to make sure there is not an underlying problem. But the average snapping ankles, or creaking knees is not a problem."

I pulled that directly from the about.com website

Take a close look at your knee caps as you bend and straighten your legs. Having knee-caps that are slightly tilted, or off track is very common in young women like you and me (My pain started when I was about 19). You might want to look at some of your friends knees at the same time to try to find some comparison.

If they look a little off, I definitely suggest seeing a doctor. The good news is that most people can keep their knees working well, and relitively pain-free with some simple strengthening exercises.

best wishes

It is the beginning stages of arthritis. It sounds like you have a tracking problem with your patella (knee cap). You should get an order from your Dr. to see a local physical therapist who can help you with exercises that correct the problem.

the synovial fluid in yr knees due to which de joint moves is dried out due to dis you dont get any lubrication in yr knees and this can be one of de reasond (infact major possibility is der) go to a doctor and tell him bout dis he will give you a cream dat gets soaked by de skin and then acts aas a lubricater if u dont yr bones will hitt each oder, wear off and eventually break so do hurry
