You are probably talking about Crane Flies (also called Daddy Long Legs) Don't know where they come from but they are totally harmless and easy enough to catch and throw out of the window if you don't like them in the house!

Crane flies or Daddy Long Legs... they normally don't come out this time of the year in the UK, but because of the chilly damp weather followed by the warm humid weather, we've had a fresh batch.....

You must mean the daddy long legs or crane fly, they are harmless within themselves but there grubs eat grass roots etc, just beneath the surface. Wine fly
