when i run half life 2 or garrys mod or hl2 episode 1, i get loads of lag, and i have a 224 mb ram, 2.8 ghz processor, and stupid sis graphics card
im thinking of getting 1 gig RAM, and a 256mb nvidia card
would this help??

1 gig ram will HELP alot .I would invest in RAM first . Cheaper and always good thing to have for a gaming machine.
This will allow your machine to speed up proccess and allow it to run more quicker.
try the Ram first then get the video card once you get more money.

yea that would help my comp isnt really good , AMD 1.8 512 RAM and 128 mb vid card, and it runs percectly fine on low settings. Make sure everything is on low settings this will help. Also that you have broadband speed connection if you're trying to run this on dial up it will never happen

the ram is key... you need memory to run those graphics first. a nice graphics card is ok, but i'd start with the RAM.
