What ever your bike needs without causing pre-ignition or detonation is high enough. Anything higher is just wasting money, as there is NO benefit to the engine!

It depends on the compression ratio of your engine. Higher octane gas is designed to operate in higher compression engines. If you use low octane fuel the force of compression alone will cause combustion even before the spark plug sparks. Obviously, this is a bad thing since the engine is designed to ignite the fuel when the spark plugs fire and not other times and it can lead to engine damage. If you're using high octane gas in a low compression engine, there is little benefit (aside from additional additives designed to prevent build up of deposits).

Today, if you use low octane gas in a car that is supposed to take high octane the computer will usually adjust timing automatically to prevent your engine from being damaged but it is still best to use what your manual tells you to use.

Whatever is the lowest level that does not cause pinging or detonation.

High octane gas is just gas designed to burn more slowly and be harder to ignite. So it doesn't ignite before it should..

Using gas that's too high octane could actually could cause your bike to make a tiny bit less power. It can't possibly make more power.

Following the manufacturers recommendation is the best idea.

Depends on the auto. Some require the higher octane, some are happier without. It also depends on altitude. You notice that 85 is sold in the lower lying states, but 87 is the lowest in the mountain areas.
