Is it safe to get a paternity test before a baby is born? Has anyone had it done? What are the risks involved? Does it hurt? I have heard that birth defects can be assessed with the same test, is that true?

Sounds like you might be talking about amniocentesis. Amnio is sometimes recommended for women over 35 because they are most likely to give birth to babies with downs syndrome or other deformities. It is not suggested for normal, healthy pregnancies, since there is a risk to the baby. Basically what they do is puncture your belly and take a sample of the amniotic fluid. They use ultrasound to guide the needle in. There are many risks to the baby, including the risk of a puncture wound, and there is a dramatic increase in miscarriage following amniocentesis.

Not only that, but the results aren't always accurate. Given your situation you are probably in a rough one, but it is far safer to wait until baby has been born before determining paternity.

The only test can be done is the amnio, where they get the DNA from the baby. The same DNA is used to detect some birth defects, and obviously can be used for paternity test.

There is a risk of miscarriage due to an amnio, the official stat is 1 in 200 would have a miscarriage. Depends on baby's cooperation and doctor's skill, it could be very little pain, to some pain and big bruise. They are sticking a needle into the tummy, so you can imagine..

I am assuming that an in utero paternity test is done the same way an amniocentisis(the test done to detect potential birth defects) is done. I have personally not had either done, but I know that there are some risks to getting this procedure done. ( you can look up information on www.webmd.com). While you are given pain medication before the procedure is done, it is going to hurt (I have had friends who have had this done and they said it is still painful). I suggest that you wait until the child is born to get a paternity test done to avoid "unneccesary" risks.

the only way to do that is a aminocentisis and there are risk in doing that and its not always accurate...i have seen it done but never will have it done UNLESS medically necessary! depending on your level of pain tolerance depends on how much it will hurt but its just a big neddle into your belly
