A tomato is a fruit, because it is the ovary of the plant along with its seeds. In fact, it is a berry. However, because it is not very sweet, it is usually served as a vegetable. The word "vegetable" has no meaning in botany, unlike the well defined "fruit," so it's only meaningful in the context of cooking. Bell peppers, cucumbers, and even peppercorns are all fruits as well.

It's a fruit.
A fruit is actually the sweet, ripened ovary or ovaries of a seed-bearing plant. A vegetable, in contrast, is an herbaceous plant cultivated for an edible part (seeds, roots, stems, leaves, bulbs, tubers, or nonsweet fruits). So, to be really nitpicky, a fruit could be a vegetable, but a vegetable could not be a fruit.

It is the fruit of a tropical vine. Just because you buy it in the vegetable section of the store does not make it a vegetable.

Actually it is not a hybrid. It is a fruit. It has seeds. Vegetables do not. That is how you tell the difference.
