As long as it is not for illegal, or fraud purposes you may be known (and expect to be known) by any name you chose. This is for England and Wales. If you wish to formalise matters you can take out a deed poll (though you do not have to) which is a very simple document drawn up by a solicitor.
In Scotland, if you have been known by a name of your choosing and have for example bank statements with your chosen name on it, after a couple of years, that name must be accepted by people as your name.

i think what you are asking is what is your actual family name, technically you can have any name you want. when you are born your parents could name you whatever they want.
but i would have to say...because your father is illegitimate...and his birth mother was a jones....i would then say you are a jones

Your name is Moss, you were registered as Moss. You can legally call yourself any name, to make it official you visit a solicitor and change it by Deed Poll, which is very quick and easy to do,!!!!!!!!!
