Have you checked out craigslist.com ? They have sections for almost every area in the US,, go to the section for your area, then the section for free stuff. I have found lot's of really good stuff in there.
Good Luck!

Also you can check out www.freecycle.org and then look in your area of the United States for the state you live in. If you live in the Central part of the US or in the Northwest, you might check out some of the other areas, then what you think it might be. All states are listed somewhere on Freecycle.
Then look for groups that are in your areas. I received a 55 gallon tank off of Freecycle. The best part of it, is that NOTHING can be sold on these groups. Everything has to be Free.

A really good place to look is local garage/yard sales.
I have seen various sizes that are available there. Also,
check your local "Nickel" ads, if you have those in your
area, as many times you can find smaller aquariums
for reasonable rates in that type of location. If your
area has a local aquarium club you might check with
them as well. Many times aquarium club members will
have used items for sale, such as aquariums, that they
no longer want or need.,

Freecycle.org - they have Yahoo groups and you can ask them for one. People give away things. Look for a group by your area. You request by posting : Wanted - 15 or 20 gallon. Does not need to be watertight, for gerbil. Thanks.
See, it's easy!
