If you are talking about the iron turtle, or whatever it is called, I am not sure who invented it, but I was pretty sure it was the Koreans. It was a boat that had iron "stapled" to the outside of the hull as well as a protective covering over the top that cannonballs would simply bounce off of, or skip across. It was powered by rowers on either side, manual of course.
