It is a view of the world based on the economic activity of the geographical areas. For example, the US, Japan and Europe, along with the coastal areas of China would be shown as intense. While Central Africa and rural China would be shown as not intense.

There are some great pictures of the world from space taken at night. The illuminated areas are the higher levels of economic activity and wealth.
