Fortunately, this is a very common change, and you shouldn't have to do too much explaining. Many people realize that without the MBA, their career paths will be limited. The answer will depend upon whether you did your MBA immediately after the b.tech, or years later.

In the first case, you can say that as you were learning about mechanical engineering, you became interested in coordinating the company's technology to meet the needs of customers. Realizing this would take more than mere technical skills, you decided to get an MBA focusing in marketing.

In the latter, you can say that while you are interested in technology, your experience developed your interest in the interface between the product and the customer's needs, and your MBA sharpened your skills in that area.

Here's an idea -
"When I was pursuing my technical degree, I found that I became interested in business as well. I promised myself when I finished my BS, I would expand my knowledge in the business area as well, which led to an MBA.
I find both of them useful because as an engineer I need to talk with business people and understand them, but then go back and translate that into the technical specifications that I and other technical folks need."

My situation - This is how I justify having a BS in Computer Science and an MA in Communications. My job as a Project Manager requires me to get specs and requirements from non-technical people in functional areas, who express such things rather vaguely, and translate them into specs for the technical people to build, and field questions both ways.

It will help you a great deal if you describe how having BOTH backgrounds makes you the best person for the job. I found that it often made me stand out from the crowd.
Good luck!
