The incoming Spanish destroyed the outer trappings of the Aztec culture out of greed and a false sense of altruism, but the ethnic traits, some of the customs, and some of the beliefs and the language still survive. The Aztec population was first decimated by conquest and disease, then absorbed. Much of what is Aztec is being researched and re-enacted to save what remains of the original culture. One terrible loss was their knowledge of how to build buildings to withstand earthquakes. The Spanish reacted typically to their times, believing that 'primitive' cultures have nothing of value to offer modern cultures. B.

The arrive of the Spaniards caused the fall of the Aztecs. Their people eventually intermarried with the Spanish and are the ancestors of today's mestizo population in Mexico.

Spanish come. Spanish see gold. Aztecs see Spanish and think that they're gods. Aztecs give the Spanish some gold. Spanish give the Aztecs some diseases. Spanish get greedy. Spanish slaughter Aztecs and steal all of the gold and send it back to Spain. End of story.
