asd the bodies decompose, we dont want any disease or bacteria surfacing. through weather and natural processes, that can come to the surface. 6 feet was an appropriate number to resolve this issue.
there is also a religious reason as well. as far as numbers go, 7 is the number of perfection, whereas 6 is the number of man, representing God is higher than us. so, when we are buried, we are 6 feet below ground, representing our mortality and imperfectness in respect to God.
hope that helps!

Bodies are buried 6 ft under as a way of stopping wild animals digging up and eating the bodies. It is also a good depth in case a cemetery becomes unused and the land is turned over to housing or agriculyure, it wouldn't be very nice to be digging your garden and finding the remains of someones Granny ! It also stops disease spreading out from the body into the atmosphere, at the depth of 6 ft there is not much chance of diseases coming into contact with anyone else. I believe that somwhere in the Bible it also says that a body should be buried equal to the height of a man standing upright.

Because they were originally buried much closer to the surface and wild animals would dig them up, etc. People also thought that dead bodies affected drinking water and released vapors that made people sick. Burying people 6 ft down dealt with the vapor issue. The whole modern park cemetery movement (mid 19th century, in this country) came out of the desire to move the dead bodies away from town and to build elaborate monuments and mausoleums.

After death, the corpse will start to decay and emit unpleasant odors due to the gases released by bacterial decomposition. Burial prevents the living from having to see and smell the corpses, So six feet down has become a standard feet for burial, which prevents unpleasent odors to be released

That is how deep you need to bury dead things( or people) so animals won't dig them up and so they don't stink.
