Maybe because of the way it works: if your parents are Jewish, you are Jewish, per definition. It does not require a particular faith, ethics or even affinity with the Jewish community. I know many who call themselves atheists and Jewish at the same time.

This is different with other religions. My ancestors were Christians but the mere fact that I don't believe in God (or maybe just the fact that I don't believe that Maria was a virgin) is enough to make me a non-Christian.

I know that a Jewish person that converts to some other religion may not be considered Jewish, that a few very devoted people become Jewish by studying the holy scripts intensively and passing some difficult exams, and that a 15/16 Jewish person with the maternal line missing may not be considered Jewish while a 1/16 Jewish person with the maternal line only may be considered Jewish, but those are technicalities. The major trend is that Jewishness runs in families, by virtue of definition.

I don't think it is a race.. It is a religion.. but I know what you mean. I heard many people say that... good question....Just a guess maybe because of Hitler.. when he gathered all the Jews and we always here you should not discriminate against a race of people like the Jews. When really he was not gathering a race but a religion.. Just a thought..

Oh the person above me if it is a race what country has that race? Don't say Israel as if you are born there you can be Muslim, Jewish, Chirsitan as it is a Religion not a nationality or a race..

As if you look up the word Race you will see it means...

People who are believed to belong to the same genetic stock...

NOT

People who have the same belief...

Now THAT is the best question I have ever heard on Y!A. Why indeed. Whay a race, or why a nation (Israel). I would very much like to see a reasoned explanation of either. But I very much doubt one will be forthcoming any time soon. Thank you for articulating what many millions of people are querying. Nothing against the Jewish faith, just a question I would like to have the answer to.

Why do people think Mexicans are a race, too? It drives me nuts! Being Jewish is both a religion and an ethnicity, but being Mexican is just an ethnicity. I think many equate bigotry with racism these days. Like they make the two synonyms. These people seem to think that if racism equals hate then all hate is racism. Obviously, there are some of us who see the error in that reasoning, but not many of us.

i used to live in a jewish neighborhood, and yes they are a race and a religion, they like to stay close and a lot won't let there kids date other kids if there not jewish, its more then a race, its an ethnicity, jewish people do have certain features and you can tell there jewish, i mean anybody can become apart of the jewish religion but your still not considered a true jew, my aunt married a jewish guy and even though she converted they "couldn't" have kids because she really wasn't jewish

First point I would like to make, you could have worded that question a little better. Kind of hard to understand what the question was. Answering the question though, being jewish is not a race (i.e. white, black, asian, etc.), it's a religion. Why people would think otherwise, they are uneducated.

'Jewish' can mean a person's religion or ethnicity. My maternal great grandparents were Jewish in ethnicity and religion. My grandmother was Jewish in ethnicity, but Pentecostal in religion. Why is that so hard for some people to grasp?

Edit: And I'll back it up with a definition...

Jew (noun) -
1. one of a scattered group of people that traces its descent from the Biblical Hebrews or from postexilic adherents of Judaism; Israelite.
2. a person whose religion is Judaism.

i think it dates back to when hitler tried to wipe them all out. He felt that they were an inferior race... to the germans. i'm pretty sure it's a religion though...you can be born into judism or you ca nconvert to it...same as any other religion basically. But if you were to look in the bible you would see that there are only 2 races in Gods eyes...jewish and gentiles....so if you not a jew , then you are a gentile and basically everyone else would fall into that catagory. Jesus was a jew and apparently via the Bible the jews are God's chosen race....it even says race....tricky question...good question to ponder on.

Yeah it's crazy that people think that way. i'm mean sammie davis jr was jewish and he's black, LOL. people generalize because they don't understand.

BonnyRogue:
You know I've seen a lot of your questions and answers and you seem to be a self hating black person. You always have something negative to say about black people even if the question doesn't even pertain to black people. She asked a legitimate question and you jump on her for no reason. Being biracial doesn't give you the right to speak negatively about black people all the time. What's YOUR problem?
