I taught myself how to crochet, and my first completed project was this insanely huge afghan for my boyfriends nephew. I just made my own pattern useing the Greenbay Packers as my theme, it was just like a cross stitch pattern. It had green white and yellow stripes then I had written 'PACKERS' in a large green stripe on both ends added a football in the middle. Anyways, not that you want to hear all about it, I just want you to know that it doesn't matter how experienced you are you can do something like that. Ok when you run out of yarn you have to change to a new skien right? Well it's exactly the same, your just doing it more frequently. If you want to keep it simple just do like a cowboy hat in the middle, in solid brown then when you finish crocheting go and backstitch details to the hat with black embroydery floss. Don't be afraid to try something new, because if you are you'll never get any further than a beginer. You gotta start some where right.

You could always take some scrap yarn and practice changeing colors until you feel comfortable with it. There a first time for everything, and if you feel ready to tackle this than you are.

You can easily find cross stitch patterns online and use them in crocheting. I do double crochet and count every square as 2 stitches, but you could also do single crochet. Best of luck to you.

i taught myself to crochet and in less than a year i was making baby dresses. the best thing to do if you aren't very good or just a beginner is to stick to simple. single color or do multi colored stripes then when you get better it will become easier for you to do more difficult patterns. but if you really want to add things like that i would do the blanket in single crochet (i know it takes a long time that way) but then just cross stitch the pictures you want on it on top of the blanket. it is less difficult then trying to crochet them into the blanket and they look just as good.

FINALLY a category for ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have been crocheting for 30 years, and I agree with the one who said go to about .com. also, you might try these too, lionbrand.com ( they do yarn, and have alot of patterns!) patternccentral.com, and stargazers, I have them all bookmarked. try googling ot, and see what you get. also, go to seafore.com, they have alot of sites on baby blankets. i wouldnt try to do anything complicated, like the western motif, but woyuld try colors, like blue, green, yelloow, purple, and stay away from the motif things. u will get confused, frustrated, and waste time, if you try to do something complicated. I have been crotheting 30+ years and i dont do motifs that require me to change yarn to make a picture in a square. you can cross stitch the boot/star/ whatever, but do you know how to do it? i would stick with just doing colors with stripes or something along that line, till you get better acquainted with crochet. But try about.com, babt blankets, and see what you get! that is where I go when i need a new pattern, and i get alot of ideas from there!
