allergies to seafood usually do develop over time, the culprit is frequent exposure to the iodide in all seafood. And the allergy worsens to the point that it can eventually kill you. Would wave goodbye to it and find another favorite. In fact, since you have developed this allergy, your potential for developing others is pretty high. If I were you, I would be seeing an allergist for testing to find any others that are suspect.

It may not be something that happened "all of a sudden". Most allergic responses develop over time. The more times you are exposed to a specific allergen (seafood), The greater physical response you will have. Your initial warning signs may have been so subtle you didn't even notice them. The thing to watch out for is tightening of the throat or shortness of breath. That is a pretty bad sign that requires quick medical attention. Also, maybe it is not the seafood, but the iodine in it. Shrimp has lots of iodine and lots of people are allergic to it.

It's essential that you get yourself tested. It may be that you are allergic to something specific that is found in sea food but also other things as well. My daughter is allergic to lactose and so it's not just milk but anything than can contain it - the hospital gave us a list 6 pages long!

Believe it or not you can develop allergies late in life. Mine started when I was 25 yrs old.

If you have the means to go to an allergist and get tested, then do so.

Unfortunately your body's reaction worsens with each exposure. If it gets too bad, then you will need to carry an EPI-pen with you. It contains roughly 3 mg of epinephrine (adrenalin) and it buys you enough time to get to the hospital. Benadryl is also another effective way to buy you time, and it lessens the anaphylactic reaction.

Best of luck.

A person's body chemistry changes approximately every seven years.

I used to have a reaction to cinnamon and now I can eat it. I found that out by accident, years ago when I ate something with cinnamon unknowingly. It can work the opposite on a person as well - just like you and the seafood.

Allergies do not develop until you have had an initial contact to the allergen. They can develop over time. Shellfish is a common allergen and any allergy can appear suddenly. Once it appears, you need to avoid the suspect food, no matter how much you love it. These allergies can kill you, so please be careful, and consider asking your doctor for a prescription to an epipen, in case you are exposed by accident. It can save your life.

It happens that you develop an allergy out of the blues. It can even fade away along the years. But if the consequences are serious, you'd better not risk!

I've heard that anyone can form an allergy to anything at any time in life. Sorry this happened to you...that really sucks! You may have an allergy to the iodine.

That's the exact opposite of me. I used to get hives and itching when I was a kid and now I can indulge all I want! Shrimp, crab and lobster all day!! Maybe we've switched bodies!
