they were so- called 'sisters' because they (early nurse) were nuns.
be reminded that women did not have the freedom to work during those times, & only the nuns were 'available'.
these nuns were engaged to provide healthcare to wounded & sick soldiers during wars.

Senior nurses, ones that are in charge of wards or departments are called Sister because it was nuns that were originally nurses so the tradition of calling them Sister has been continued. It is a bit like consultants are called Mr rather than Doctor, this dates back to when doctors were there to give out medicines and to try to make patients better and if an operation or procedure were needed it fell to the local barber to carry out the surgery. Hence Mr as was not a qualified medical professional. That tradition is also one that has been continued to this day (although, consultants Mr's are now qualified)

It is not clear, why nurses are called sisters.By their role, nurses are kind and concerned about patients, but surely they can not be and they are not sisters. In earlier days, child birth used to take place with the help of'ayahs',which literally mean mothers. They used to be aged and experienced and so were appropriately called so.But in due course of time Nursing Education has brought a new generation of young nurses and probably not to be offensive, having regard to their ages, they have come to be called as sisters. This is the only reasoning for the origin of sister in nursing context.

Nuns are called sisters, not nurses. Now, if a nun is also a nurse, she would qualify to be called sister. Clear? LOL

I'm watching an Aussie TV series and they refer to all the nurses as "sisters" whether they're married or not. I wondered why. Here in the USA we just refer to them as nurses.

In ancient days, it is the elder sisters who nurse the younger children since the mother has many many children, and lots and lots of work to do, with very little time even to spare for siblings !

previously nuns was working as nurse and nuns are called as a sister but now its not like this. scenario has changed now other people like hindu and muslims are also work as a nurse so now we have to come out with this word and use the word madam for female nurse and sir for male nurse.
