So sorry neocon but NO. Back in pre-1960's We Dem's had a racist wing called southern democrats. After a democrat passed the equal rights act of 1964, the southern Dem's ran to the republican party and basically took it over where there legacy lives on in the current evangelical christian movement. We did not create the KKK that was someone Else's brain child. Besides if were the racist party how come we have by far the most minorities? That doesn't seem to track with your delusional ideals does it?

Well, what Gamerbear said is not exactly true. While there was a bit of a revolt against Lyndon Johnson by some of the southern states during the 1964 election. The phenomenon of the Democratic "Solid South," where all of the southern states voted Democrat in Presidential elections to punish the Republicans for freeing the slaves, did not end until 1980, a generation after the landmark 1964 civil rights legislation.

The only exception was the "landslide" 1972 Nixon election. And this election was one where a very weak Northern Democrat, George McGovern, ran against a very popular incumbent, Richard Nixon. In this election, all of the states except Massachusetts voted for Nixon.

So, more than likely what happen is the racist segregationists stayed in the Democratic party, and maybe voted Republican a couple of times than eventually died off. Then the next generation of southerners started becoming Republicans.

Nope. Rather the opposite. It's a pretty well known historical fact that the southern democrats had a bad racist streak...right into the 1960's with all the racial tension then. Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act against the demands of much of his party, and was warned if he signed the segregationist faction of the democratic party would leave the party. He is famous for having said it was a law more important than the political party he belonged to, and signed anyway. Sure enough, a huge number of democrats in the south left the party and became republicans, and that began the huge upswing in power of the Republicans that has dominated political life in America ever since. So, in a sense, modern democrats are likely to be much less racist than historical democrats.

What kind of logic is this? That's like me saying "Since a guy created this question and this question is stupid, does that make all guys stupid?" Think about this buddy. First of all the Democratic Party did not "create" the KKK. Maybe, and I stress the word "Maybe," the leader/creator of the KKK called himself a democrat. That doesn't immediately mean that the Democratic Party created the KKK. And the logic used to come to the conclusion of all democrats being racist is false. You can't say that one person/group represents all of the beliefs of another person/group. It just doesn't make logical sense. Rethink your strategy and try again.

That doesn't make sense. Most of the south were Democrats at the time of the Civil War and most of the KKK were probably Democrat but that doesn't mean the Democratic Party is pro KKK or that they started it. It is kinda ironic that the president who outlawed slavery was a Republican (Abe Lincoln) but the Democrats want to take credit for being pro-minorities all the time.

WHAT? That is rediculous! First of all, it was definately NOT the Democratic Party that started the KKK, it might have been some 'Democrats' back that did so but it was definately not the party. And even if it did, which it didn't, we can see that Democrats of today are not racist. To this point it seems that they are more for equal rights of all races and orientations than Republicans.

Glad to see you don't let simple things like "facts" get in the way of your beliefs.

The Democratic Party did not start the KKK. While some of their founders were Democrats, that is different than saying it was started by the party.

the KKK wasn't started by the democrats or any political party for that matter. it was started by general Nathan Bedford Forrest to stop the carpet baggers and scalawags {white republicans} from coming to the south and taking over. just because your probably a republican don't attach the KKK to the democrats. president Johnson had done more for race relations then any republican ever could or would do. your misguided in your assumptions.

Well Shiraz, it seems that you are missing a point. In the past the Democrats were the Conservatives and the Republicans were the Liberals, there came a time when there was a dramatic switch, and now we have the Republican Conservatives and the Democrat Liberals. You failed to look into that.
