Why did they fail to recognize that the dangers we face know no political party, and the solutions and leadership we need now go beyond ideology?

Im afraid to tell you this dear, but everyone has accepted the opposite already. They do have an ideology. Islamic Extremisim is just as based in Ideological thought as, say, Communism, Facism, Democracy, Market Capitalism and the like.
The war could indeed be seen as an IDEOLOGICAL one, and it is impossible for modern democratic parties to function without ideology. It drives our parties, our politics and our lives

Terra is another name for 'Earth'. Neo-Cons may be bad, but i doubt their waging a war against Mother Nature

That would be why they don't want the Democrats to win. The threats we face from terror won't go away if the Democrats or Republicans win, but the GOP feels that they are stronger on security. And regardless of why we went into Iraq, it is now a major front on the War on Terror, due to the sheer number of foreign terrorists pouring across Iraq's borders. To leave before the job is finished would be a grave mistake, and that is what the Dems are advocating.

The answer depends on whether you're asking the party leadership that question, or the party followers.
Frankly, party leadership doesn't care. They're all big business, and war is good for bidness.
The followers are so angry and afraid that they'll believe anything their leaders say, as long as it makes them feel safe.
