I am American and a republican. I live in Watertown, MA. But i have to speak my mind: Soldiers from poor area's in the US have to go fight in the desert so the companies can consider the next big oil contract is a done deal. The Bin Laden's (and other Saudi families) and the Bush's share business interests. Cheney's company is reeling in business deal after business deal in Iraq. How can people be so gullible to believe all that bring-freedom-to-the-world crap??? It's all about the money! There's nothing wrong with wanting to stimulate economy, but it is when hundreds and thousands of soldiers have to die for it. And why do most of these soldiers have to be from poor backgrounds? I don't see any congress members send there kids of to Iraq? So let me tell ya what the nazi's used to say: ERWACHE!!!

@jooker: Your remark reveals your ignorance. I clearly said: "why do MOST OF" of these soldiers have to be from poor backgrounds? I didn't say "all" but "most of".
Besides, the exception confirms the rule.

Apparently you believe that war stimulates the economy.

It is not true that war *builds* the economy. War takes resources away from productive uses and destroys them. All the materiel we burn up fighting represents tax dollars that could have been used to build something lasting, like schools, roads, medical research, etc.

War can stimulate an economy that is in the dumps by forcing it to get moving again, but in the long term, the overwhelming effect is to destroy valuable resources. All a war does is force the government to instigate deficit spending, which it could do without needing a war.

Some companies made money off the war; that has always been the case. If you were smart, you would make money off it too. There is nothing wrong with selling stuff to the government.

However, it would be wrong if a company had undue influence over the government's decision to wage war.

If you have any evidence of this, you should state it; otherwise, you are just another conspiracy theorist. With all the investigative journalists we have these days, I don't think this kind of thing could go on at a large scale.

ERWACHE...das ist bestimmt die Wahrheit! However, that being said, I'm not sure that America isn't ALREADY awake but JUST DOESN'T CARE. I mean, how much more information is required before Americans as a whole are aware of the fast ride to destruction they're being taken on by what is quite possibly the most cynical and exploitative presidential administration in U.S. history. Similarly, in returning to the 1930's Germany analogy, by the time everyone there realized where the Hitler regime had taken that nation - or possibly even CARED - it was all over for them, with millions dead and the country in ruins. I KNOW...I grew up in what was left of Austria and Germany in the (late) 40's and 50's, and it wasn't a pretty sight.
By the way, you put your finger on a LOT of essential points regarding the anti-American shenanigans being perpetrated by the (current) military-industrial complex; President Eisenhower WARNED us about this in his farewell speech. The difference today is that now instead of the president being a RESTRAINING influence on the war-and-money-mongers, he is their NUMBER ONE CHEERLEADER..

Nice try, your no Conservative. Halliburton is not Cheney's company. Halliburton was one of only two companies in the world that could have pulled off such a large undertaking in such a short amount of time. The other was a French company (Frenchy gets not work).
The one person/company that has made the largest "net" (that's after the bills are paid) profit, is Micheal Moore from his books and movie. So, if you got a gripe, complain about MM making hundreds of millions of dollars from the sacrifices made by American soldiers.

WAR is a racket. It always has been.
It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives.
A racket is best described, I believe, as something that is not what it seems to the majority of the people. Only a small "inside" group knows what it is about. It is conducted for the benefit of the very few, at the expense of the very many. Out of war a few people make huge fortunes.
