I only mean mental characteristics. And I am male.

I think that a real man is a man who is in touch with the full range of his feelings but also has plenty of self-control. It can be scary to realize that you can cry or think that something is beautiful but you aren't much of a man if you're too scared to cry. Limiting yourself to a few emotions is stupid and does nobody any favors. A real man has a code of honor. He does whatever he can to help people less advantaged than himself.

A real man protects and provides for his family and friends. A real man will try to avoid conflict but won't hesitate to smash some guy's face in if his family is threatened.

Basically, I think that real men are brave, honest, stalwart and in touch with themselves.

What do you think?

I think that you are a hell of a man. I wish more men realized this and thought this way. Good for you.

You people put down some desirable traits that should apply for both men and women.

Probably the question should be about those characteristics of men that distinguish them from women in their role in family, life, etc, such as the classical ideal of the "protector" or "provider".

But in this age of equal rights, nothing really defines a man that couldn't equally well define a feminist, I mean a woman.

Frankly I think to be a man you need to be stubborn, controlling, self-centered and two faced. Oh and I forgot lazy, dishonest, self-important and stupid. Everyone knows men are scum, men are pigs at least most of the time so why would you even want to ponder this question?

You are right. In my opinion a real man is one like my grandfather was a man who stays with his family and takes care of not just his wife and kids but the other family members in need. To me a real man is a family man.

I think your definition of a 'real man' would be a good definition of a real woman also. Remember in the heart of each thing is it's opposite.

I think you have a good definition of a man. The only thing I would like to add is respect and compassion.
