Some women with a manly occupation look and act manly, more than on average. Do these women choose manly careers because of their innate manly personality, or do they start developing manly traits as a side-effect after choosing manly careers?

I agree with Missouri, in order to survive in man dominated jobs, you have to show you're tough, or the men are going to walk all over you. There is still tons of discrimination in male dominated workplaces. I have a friend who works on a road crew for the state, and she's had to put up with tons of comments from male co-workers. Either you put up with it and let them know it doesn't bother you, (the appearence of a manly woman) or if they see a weakness, they'll never leave it alone.

A woman has to have a certain personality to start a career like that. You wouldn't see Paris Hilton working in a steel factory, now would you? Of course, you wouldn't see Paris Hilton working anywhere.... Ok, bad example... anyway, I think it's a little of both. There's also a certain kind of front that a woman has to put up in order to be taken seriously by these men, who are often pigs. If you haven't seen North Country, you should. It's worth it, but it will pi** you off.

I think it's the former. But you know, a lot of those jobs pay pretty well, especially in those where muscle is the factor, so perhaps it goes both ways. Start the job because it suits your personality, and then your body firms up in response to the muscles used.
