The CPU is the Central Processing Unit. Everything must pass through it and be processed. Check out Wikipedia for more info:

"Processing." isn't exactly the best answer to "the functions of a CPU"

That is the central proccesing unit which is the BRAIN of the computer.
What it does is take the inforation and processes it.
