Did you ever have sound to begin with? If so, there's like no way Device Manager would show no errors. What you're looking for is a yellow circle with an exclamation mark (!) inside it. Right click on that yellow circle, it will prompt you to re-install the drivers.

Install the drivers for the sound card. Also, try rebooting. If there is still nothing in Device Manager, there might be something wrong with your sound card.

If there is no sound card listed in your device manager than re connect your sound card on your motherboard and then use the option scan for hardware changes in your device manager. And If in-case the sound card is built in then, search on Yahoo search or google search for your motherboard drivers that includes the updated version keeping your operating system version in mind.

control panel. sounds. check to see if volume is on and up. are the speakers turned on and up. are they plugged into the correct place (move them with computer turned off.) If none of this works, control panel add hardware. See if the computer can find them. Find your driver disk and install the sound card drivers. If this doesn't work, consider spending $20 to buy a soundcard (e-mail me, I have an extra) install it and drivers and set it up as default.

check in control panel and and sounds and see if it is enabled and not muted

Reinstall drivers... or if you haven't done this ... install them.
