~*~ It depends on the State/City/Pueblo you move to and the "type" of neighborhood/house you want. I am from the state of Guanajuato.. I live in a rancho.. I spend probably $140-$160 USD for the electricity for 2 months. I spend $2.00 on water. Food varies. I'd say $50-$70/month. I eat at home mostly. Pack of Marlboro Cigs are $20 pesos.. $2.00/pack.. Fiesta or another cheaper pack are like $15 to $17 pesos. Lighters are $10 pesos if you want a bic.. Beer is like $8 pesos for a Modelo small bottle.. $18 pesos for Corona family size (caguama).. Gas is sold by the liter.. Last time I was there (march '06) it was almost $7 pesos/liter.. well, hope this helps a little.. Goodluck!!! ~*~

All depends where you plan to go. If you live in the smaller non-touristy towns you could get by fairly cheaply. $1000 would probably stretch nicely. I can almost guarantee if you stay in a resort or touristy area, you will be paying alot for rent, food, cigs, beer. I think tequila is the only thing that has remained cheap in mexico!

Yes, you can live on $1000 a month if you are careful and do not live in an expensive resort city. Your rent would be your biggest expense. Busses are reasonable. Cyber cafes are, too. Living in a temperate region you would not need air conditioning or much heat. Plate lunch specials at certain restaurants are well priced. Mexicans live on much less and you could also if you are frugal. Speaking Spanish really helps ! !

You should do OK I lived low budget $15.00 per day Oaxaca 1997 1998 sure it's gone up some by now, I know you can do good on your budget and that is eating good and enjoying you can rent a nice place on that. close to the zocalo or go out it's cheaper. I loved it.Playa would cost you more but you can do OK I spent lots time in Tulum 15 miles from playa.
