Red Raspberry Leaf in Pregnancy
For thousands of years midwives of old and chinese herbalists have used herbs with very good results. Most of our allopathic medicines have come from herbs. A safe, commonly used herbal tonic for pregnancy is red raspberry leaf tea.

Brewed as a tea or as an infusion, red raspberry leaf is one of the safest and commonly used tonic herbs for women wanting to get pregnant or for women who are already pregnant. Red Raspberry Leaf (Rubus idaeus) tones the uterus, improves contractions and decreases constipation.

When to use There are two basic stances on the subject. There is agreement among many clinicians that in the 3rd trimester frequent (2- 3 cups per day of tea or 1 - 2 cups per day of infusion) is beneficial to the uterine and pelvic muscles. Red Raspberry Leaf contains many minerals and vitamins, including vitamin C and calcium. It also contains an alkaloid called fragrine, which lends tone to the uterus.

The more radical stance is that drinking one cup of tea per day in the 1st trimester and 2 cups in the 2nd trimester and switching to the infusion in the 3rd trimester ensures a strong uterus, is good for you nutritionally and prevents miscarriage. Some say it is advised to not use it in the first trimester, particularly if you have a history of miscarriage.

The more conservative stance is that red raspberry leaf can cause minor spotting in the beginning of a pregnancy, and some U.K. midwives claim an increase in miscarriage rates. Contact your midwife, herbalist or physician for more information. If you're thinking about using it, to be safe, just wait until you're 36 weeks along.

What does Red Raspberry Leaf Do? Red Raspberry leaf does not start labor or promote contractions. It is NOT an emmenagogue or oxytocic herb. What it does is help strengthen the pelvic and uterine muscles so that once labor does start the muscles will be more efficient.

Tea recipe To make a tea, pour 1 cup boiling water over 2 teaspoons of herb and steep for ten minutes. Strain. During the first two trimesters, drink 1 cup per day. During the final trimester, drink 2-3 cups per day.

You can harvest your own red raspberry leaves or can purchase them dried in bulk from your local health food store or organic grocery. I like to harvest my own. To dry the leaves quickly, I lay them on a cotton sheet in the back of my vehicle on a hot day with the windows closed. I use a wonderfully nourishing recipe that also includes rose hips for Vitamin C and stevia, which is naturally sweet.

Yeah, theres nothing in the tea that could hurt you, unless your doctor specifically ordered you not to drink any caffiene, for whatever reason.

And anyway, its not going to induce labor. If it did, it wouldnt matter, because it is your due date :)

"Herbalists have long believed that raspberry leaf tea taken regularly during pregnancy can prevent complications and make delivery easier. Raspberry has also been used to reduce excessive menstruation and relieve symptoms of diarrhea. However, there is no evidence that it is safe or effective for these uses."

Ive listed the links that i found most helpful in answering your question. Basically, its unproven either way that it could hurt you.

Here is the best summation so far:

"Is it true that raspberry tea can bring on labor?
Herbalists maintain that it can. Red raspberry leaf, they say, helps relax the uterus and induce contractions. But Sam Page, a natural products chemist with the FDA, counters that while the agency hasn't seen any evidence of the herb causing toxic effects, no proof backs up the belief that it's a safe labor aid either. The bottom line? Use common sense and talk to your medical provider before taking any herbs during pregnancy."

Bottom line, there is no physical evidence that this tea can make you go into labor. Herbalist and promoters of all natural ingredients and herbs say that it can have that effect, but there has been no official hard evidence.

I would go ahead and ask your doctor what he thinks, but the thing is that if its your due date you are due to have the child any time now. It wont hurt you if you were to go into labor.

Congratulations!

Yes the tea is safe. I have consulted 3 different doctors and they all say the tea is safe. The tea is not only helpful is helping with quick labours but also after your birth helps you heal faster and also helps your milk come in faster if your planning on breast feeding. I know this for a fact as when I had my daughter I went into labour at 2 am and had her at 2:45am. And just three weeks ago I had a Son and my labour was only 2 hours but I have to say it is better than 36 hours or even 12 hours of pain. But just to be safe talk to your doctor and see what they have to say you can look it up on the web if your not too sure " look up Red rasberry tea when pregnant " and read the pros there are no cons.

Yes. Red Raspberry Leaf tea is perfectly safe.

It is not the same as Raspberry *flavored* black tea, and does NOT contain caffeine.

Red Raspberry herb has been used for female health and pregnancy care for thousands of years. Most doctors and midwives recommend it during pregnancy. It has a long track record of safety and effectiveness.

It will not induce labor if your body is not ready. It strengthens the uterus, and it will not harm anything. You can drink it all through pregnancy if you want, I have done so several times.

I myself have used Red Raspberry Leaf during all of my pregnancies, and I found it did help make my labor go smoother, and helped my recovery be quick and easy. Some herbalists also say Red Raspberry helps with milk production.

Go ahead and drink up! Enjoy.

I don't care what anyone says about this but I drank cateroil to make myself go into labor. It works believe me I have 4 kids to prove it works. I went over my due date with all of my kids. I also gave it to my sister she went into labor 15 minutes later. Mine took a little longer. The first one took 45 minutes to work, the second took 1 hour and 30 minutes, the third took about 45 minutes and for my fourth it took about 25 minutes. I'm telling ya it does work.

If it's your due date for your rent, go ahead and buy that red raspberry tea, your land lord will understand. If it's your due date for your phone bill, you might have to deal with the minor inconvenience of not being able to make phone calls if you go ahead and get that tea.

First off CONGRATS! And no, i dont think eating an airplane can stop a baby that is ready to come out. I am extremely skeptical on those pregnancy myths anyway. I was told eating strawberries during my pregnancy would give my daughter those red birthmarks that stick out. Well, being pregnant i wasnt gonna drop my favorite food for anyone lol SHe came out without any kind of birthmark. Those old Bama Tales are never reliable. Go ahead, drink up!

Why not something else? Tea has anti-oxidants that wash out the iron from your body. Your body will need the extra iron during labor and to produce ample breast milk after you deliver. Plus, the caffeine isn't the best choice either. I would go with milk or raspberry-grape juice myself.

Yes rasberry leaf tea is safe - you can even buy it in some pharmacies. Try having sex too - worked for me! (but probably not while you're drinking the tea)
