get a firewall like zone alarm installed and set it to alert you when someone is trying to hack you.

Don't be paranoid. Why would anyone hack into a individuals computer. If they could do that they would go for bigger targets where there was financial gain.
The makers of computer programmes love guys/gals like you and they make millions out of it. Half of them create the problem in the first place. Just think of how many individual computers there are in the world - so why would they worry about you?

Just cut out the Worms and hijackers who do it at random thru the programmes you access.
A decent Virus/firewall checker will sort them out.
I use PC Cillian which is simple and does the job.
Don't be sucked in by Norton 2006/2007 they are crap and create more problems than they prevent.

Adaware at lavasoft.com is free and will clean out a lot of the crap but not all.

Just enjoy it is only a machine and is not irraplaceble if it all falls in a hole..

Install a good firewall like Zonealarm (Free from download.com). Set it to record all activities. Do not block any coming or going traffic. Let the computer set for 24 hours. Check the log file and see if there has been any activity - have things transferred between your PC and the Internet coming or going). If so, you may be hacked.

You then set the firewall to block the traffic.

There's monitoring software that you can download. Black Ice Defender (among others) allows you to see the number of outside attempts made to hack your computer. Also, how you setup your firewall is crucial. Here's a guide to help you with that:

Good Luck!

The other answers are good, but the best way is to educate yourself on the risks and holes that are exploited in all operating systems. If you wish to research the answer and get some tools that can help you detect many of the problems in your system then have a look at this site http://www.remote-exploit.org/index.php/Main_Page

run a firewall like zonealarm (search on the web for a free user copy), it will block illegal accesses from the web world. It also has options to view who has tried to access your machine and I promise you it is scary when you see what happens even in one minute.
