Definitely. He is the best player we have got and I think being captain will inspire him even more especially against the Aussies. I think Strauss was only third choice at one time behind Flintoff and Trescothick. He has done well but I still feel Freddie is the one for the job. He must not overdo his bowling and must also seek advice from other senior players if necessary which I am sure he will do. I think also that he will inspire Harmison to perform well as they get on very well. Whoever the England captain is it will be a big ask to retain the Ashes. The Australians are a great side and never know when they are beaten. Here's to a great series hopefully

According to the player's accounts, Flintoff is a very passive captain whilst Strauss takes charge and is very proactive. I felt Strauss's bowling decisions in the one dayers were poor, an area Flintoff would be better in. However flintoff has been hesitant in deciding when to bowl himself, either doing it too much or not enough.
I'd say for the Ashes, England need a more proactive leader like Strauss. Freddie's popularity could well work against him as he is very close to his teammates and unwilling to take decisions that may upset them. He bowled Harmison in India even when he was lacking line and length - the pair of them are best friends and I felt this affected his judgement. Strauss had always been very impartial, he would definately benefit from bowling advice, however.

I agree with you 100% on all points. England need someone other than Flintoff to decide when Flintoff is fit and when Flintoff should bowl and be taken off.
Strauss has shown a shrewd cricket brain vs Pakistan & even manged to win 2 one-day internationals.

I dont really think it matters who captains England. The only reservation with Flintoff being captain is that out in India he bowled himself too much. As long as he chills out and lets the other bowlers do what they've been taken to do it'll be fine. I think the Aussies are big favourites, but this England team wont give the Ashes back without one helluva fight!

I'd of gone with Strauss and let Freddie concentrate on bowling the Aussies out then smashing them all over the ground.

I think it may affect Freddie's game - thinking of the way it affected Botham's in 80s. Botham's own game went to pieces, and he didnt get it back until Brearley took the captaincy.
Freddie is a brilliant motivator but i think i agree with you that maybe Strauss who has had a magnificent summer whilst freddie was injured would have been good too.
We need to sit back and watch..and hopefully blow the aussies out of the field!!

Fitness is the big question. We don't need another tour where the captaincy chops and changes with every match. I'd have given it to Strauss, purely on the basis that he is in the seat at present.

He certainly has the playing credentials, whether he has the qualities of leadership and the ability to bring out the best in others is an unknown quantity. The unfortunate part of his selection to this role is he is prone to injury and playing the aussies at home he is bound to lose the series and this will be a blow to his future confidence.

strauss is better option as he is only a batsman not a bowler aswell, and England are doing better with Strauss than they did when Freddie was captain.
