Causation is normally called 'causality' in statistics.

Two or more variables can be dependant but not causally linked.

That is one does not cause the other.

There is a famous quote you should learn... "correlation does not imply causation". That is... if two variables are dependant you should not assume they are cause and effect related. (That of course does not PRECLUDE the possibility that they are just that you can not use statistical methods EVER to infer that.)

just because two things may be related statistically, does not automatically mean one causes the other.

For example, a study found that African-American women who get breast cancer are more likely to die as a result of it than Caucasian women. This does not necissarily mean that there is a genetic trait that caused them to die at a greater rate, you have to look deeper than that. It could be that African-Americans are less likely to have access to good health care that could prevent their deaths.

cause-ation. having item X causes item Y to occur

Having $5,000,000 means you are rich. Causation.

Being rich does not mean you have $5,000,000. You might only have $1,000,000. Not causation.

i believe it means that two events are not independet: one causes the other, or a change of one variable causes a change in another.
