Shes concerned that the procedure was done incorrect, asking me i was un-to sure myself. What the council did was removed the gas fires from both bottom and top floors, and blocked off with bricks and a vent you can open and close. They didnt block any of the chimney top off, but inside her attic where you can see the angling of the chimney, they put in a machine to remove damp. She said they didnt sweep the chimney before they blocked it and shes concerned that when it rains water will come in and form damp with the remaining dust in the chimney. Is she right to worry?

leave the vents open it will kepp drawing up air to help keep dry ,it might have been better if they had put some vented covers on top but dont worry.

I have done the same thing myself, but without the machine for removing damp, looks like the people who did the work probably did more than they needed to! That is a good thing.
Look at i this way, that chimney has probably been there over 100 years with no trouble, unless she had pools of water in the bottom of her fire places there will be no trouble.

There is no problem here. If she had gas fires, then the chimneys won't need sweeping. What is important though, is that the vents are left open so that damp doesn't become a problem. It is essential that air is allowed to circulate around the chimney walls.

don't worry, chimneys with gas fires do not need sweeping.
the airvents are to help prevent damp and the chimney was left open for airflow also to prevent damp.

Naa ...its cool
damp is caused by no air being allowed inside the chimney .....sounds like she is worrying over nothing

Send a small boy up into the chimney.

If she's that concerned, she should have some inspector from the council come and inspect it all and put her mind at ease.

Worry not. Sounds like they knew what they were doing. Would possibly have been better to have swept them first, but it sholdn't be a problem.
